Honestly I kinda like these characters, and I like the idea of how Sorachi’s kinda revisiting and developing some of his one-off characters from early on in the manga.

Oranges box might be a reference to the soviet cartoon Gena the Crocodile, where Cheburashka, one of the main characters, was found in oranges box. Apparently, it’s extremely popular in Japan, they even made an anime remake.
