Gintama Volume 71

Gintama Volume 72

Hey there everybody. So I’ve finally had time to do another one of these. I talked about this a bit back last May when we finished volume 72. But since we finished Kokou no Hito I have some more time to work on doing some volume versions of this series. I explained this all basically in the previous post last year and not much is different so I’ll just refer you to that post for details. But basically we’d like to do volume versions of Gintama volume 46 to 71 which we’ve only been able to do with the lower-quality versions from the Shounen Jump magazine scans.

But it takes a good 20-30-ish hours of work to do one of these, even considering the translation is already done, so it’s hard to justify doing that much time and effort for 26 volumes. But here’s one. And there’s 25 to go now. Hopefully we get more done in not as long. We can automate a few steps but every chapter needs to be re-cleaned and all the redraws redone in addition to translating all the extras that are only in the volume. The automation process aligns them to the digital volume raws which are super low res and look even worse than the scanned Jump magazine raws tbh. And for some reason there’s a handful of pixels on a couple of the edges that are in the digital volumes but not the physical volumes so we then need to copy over those edges from the digital volumes to make a “final” “complete” version. Plus we’re trying to fix any mistakes and we’re changing the sound effects to be typeset in-line with the images rather than in the margins. All that takes a long time to do for 200 pages. So there’s no way to do this super fast.

I’m trying to get the rest of them scanned. I think I need to scan 20 more. I figure if we can at least digitize them then maybe we can eventually do at least do some sort of really quick version of these and just skip some parts like doing the extras and fixing up the sound effects and the translation, just so some kind of high-res version exists. Teppy, who’s mainly the head mod on the discord, has volunteered to help with this so we’ll see how that goes. If he’s able to work on them consistently and get them fully cleaned and such regularly, then my workload is just to translate the extras and fix up the translations. In which case I can justify spending the time to do it. So hopefully that goes well, otherwise this will probably continue to be just a thing we work on every “once in a while” with no fixed schedule. I just don’t wanna spend 6 months of my free time redoing all of these, it’s probably not worth it (I’d probably do that if there were like 10 of these but there’s 26). I’m not even sure how many people are gonna read this at this point as the series ended in 2019 and it’s largely just a visual upgrade. Course if anyone else would like to volunteer, you can join the discord and DM me or email me at kewl0210@gmail.com or contact me in some other way. Just understand that it’s a lot of hours of tedious work to do these, so you need to be willing to stick with it.

As for the volume itself, this is mainly just exactly the magazine version in higher resolution with more detail plus the extras are included. A few panels have added or changed highlights and backgrounds. It no longer has the insert texts and series logo on the first page? Not much else. The results of the 5th character popularity poll are in this and for some reason they’re slightly different from the magazine version (They seemingly lost track of a handful of votes and then included them in the volume version). This volume has Bansai’s big final moments which I really love.

So besides this I’m working on Managing Director Shima volume 2 and the next 3-Gatsu no Lion chapter comes out in the next issue of Young Animal. See yall later.

Edit: Apparently how this will work with ComicK is I have to upload the new chapters then at some point they will be “combined” with the old Jump versions thus overriding them with the new versions. But someone in their staff has to o it manually. I opened a ticket about it so they should do that any time now. But until then there’s two versions of these chapters by Hi Wa Mata Noboru on the site.

Edit 2: The chapters are now in the correct place on ComicK now. Apparently in this case it will use the OLD chapter’s URL so the URL has been updated.

The JOJOLands Ch. 25

The JOJOLands 25

Hey everybody, welcome back from the month break. Here’s chapter 25. This chapter is a bit shorter than the previous ones, it’s only 31 pages long (Counting the cover). I think that’s probably because Araki-sensei was doing a Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan one-shot which took longer than a standard chapter of the main series, so he had less time to do as many pages even with no new chapter last month. Or maybe he designed it this way intentionally, who knows.

You all might’ve heard, MangaDex got hit with a bunch of DMCAs and those scanlations had to be taken down. Among our projects, The JOJOLands, Doubutsu no Kuni, #DRCL Midnight Children, Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi, Division Chief Shima Kōsaku, Sensei no Shiroi Uso, Innocent and Innocent Rouge, and Neko ga Nishi Mukya were taken down from there. Some of those make sense because they were licensed after we worked on them, but I have no idea what’s up with Shima or Takeshi. Like, Takeshi ended in 2005 I’m pretty sure it’s not going to be licensed. Regardless, it seems like we need a new primary online reader. Most groups I know are moving to comick.io, which seems fine, so we’ll use that at least for now. All our old releases are already on there because they were mirroring from MangaDex. You can still download the files here as usual. I’m fairly sure I’m not allowed to upload new chapters to MangaDex now but they haven’t really communicated anything about what happened clearly (People are deriving what happened from forum posts and investigating it on their own such rather than any sort of formal announcement).

Besides that, it looks like The JOJOLands volume 7 is coming out July 17th. And we’ve started on Managing Director Shima volume 2. I might try to do more Gintama volumes soon-ish too depending on my schedule. Next Jojo chapter comes out on June 18th Japan time. See ya later!

Edit: This is now updated with the higher-resolution Chinese raws from Bilibili like we did for the last few chapters.

Managing Director Shima Kōsaku Volume 1

Managing Director Shima Kōsaku Volume 1

Well, to China we go.
Everyone we’ve made it to the big time. Our boy Shima is finally on the board of directors. And we’re finally into part 3 of the series! The third part of the series is 8 volumes long. The director arcs are all fairly short, relatively speaking (They’re not easy to translate I’ll tell you that). And after the first one, the Managing Director arc, the number of pages per volume goes down a little. They go from around 230 pages down to more like 185-190 pages. So when/if we get to that point, it should take a bit less time to do each volume and it stays like that for the rest of the series. But for now, we still have 7 more of these longer volumes to do. The three director arcs are all way shorter than the first two arcs. All of them combined is about the same length of the Section Chief arc in terms of pages. This is volume 31 in the whole series and the newest one that came out in Japan just now was volume 90. Not counting the prequels (21 volumes) and the side/extra volumes (3) and the spinoffs (Some other number). So, ya know, we’re moving right along. Don’t expect us to catch up any time soon/ever.

So this volume is a bit unique in that it’s more or less an epilogue of Division Chief. A few of the plot lines that were in Division Chief get their finale (At least until those character show up again, sometime in the future, many volumes from now, in some cases), and then it’s only in the last two chapters of this volume where Shima actually makes it to Shanghai. From there it starts a new arc with new characters. And we finally meet Kokubun! A character who’s a mainstay for the whole series up to the current ones still coming out. There’s also a bunch more discussion of suicide in this volume so be warned.

I mention this in a translation note but we’re writing the names of the Chinese characters with their Chinese spelling/pronunciation which is usually a bit different from how they’re pronounced in Japanese. This isn’t really much different to how you’d write a name pronounced in Japanese “Edowaado” as “Edward” in the translation, but I figured I’d mention it. So a character in Japanese that’s pronounced as “Ryū Ensei” would be written as “Liu Yangsheng”. Same with names of Chinese locations and such. They’re all based on the Mandarin pronunciation, specifically. This is pretty much the standard/obvious way to do it, but I figured I’d leave a bit of an explanation about it.

Also ya know I could never find ANY of the magazine covers or color pages for the chapters in this volume. It’s frustrating how hard those are to find. I’m only going so far as looking them up on the internet because the physical magazines from 20+ years ago are so hard to track down. Anyhow, yeah we’re still including the bunkoban covers and zenshuu covers. The cover designs change with the new part, too.

Ok well that’s all I can think of talking about. The next Jojo chapter comes out next week. Until then I guess I’ll be starting on volume 2 now. I hope you enjoy this, everyone!
