Gishi Sanjinden (Falsified History: An Account of the Sanjin (Mountain People)) by Shino Ura

Ooookaay so finally at long last here this is, the sequel to Yuugai Muzai Gangu (Toys Harmful But Unprohibited). Gishi Sanjinden. We also did one independent one-shot by Shino Ura called Mugen Tengoku last year, which is the last thing Shino Ura has published so far.

This is an anthology of short stories that are really weird and surreal. It’s sort of a sequel to Yuugai Muzai Gangu. Though all the stories are unique there’s a loose connection between all of them. Like little references and sometimes characters from previous ones make cameos. These were originally a collection of webcomics and then they were compiled into tankoubons under the Comic Beam label of the company Enterbrain (They weren’t actually in the magazine Comic Beam though). It’s got all sorts of weird stuff in it. It’s a lot of psychological and logically perplexing stories with a running theme about what’s real and what isn’t. It’s kind of in the style of short stories by Jorge Luis Borges. It’s really good and I hope everybody reads this and Yuugai Muzai Gangu (You don’t really need to read them in any order though). This tankoubon originally came out in 2019 though it contains some one-shots which were published on the author’s website beforehand (like 2016-2018), but they then had changes/additions when they were compiled into a book like this. A couple pages were in color in the webcomic so we included those in this release. You can buy it in Japanese to support the author if you want.

Originally I was going to do this right after Yuugai Muzai Gangu but all sorts of other stuff got in the way. Then when I started it I realized it was going to take WAY longer than Yuugai Muzai Gangu which we did all of in a couple weeks. This collection is a LOT wordier and pretty different but great in different ways. It ended up taking several days to translate each of these chapters besides 3 and 4 which are fairly short. And there was a pretty extensive editing process, a lot more redraws, and that sort of thing too. Honestly I’m quite happy to have this done. I hope everybody checks it out. It doesn’t take too long to read so long as you’re reading it in your native language.

Also this is the last publication by Shino Ura that’s been released besides their webcomics that haven’t been put into tankoubons and one 4-page story that was in an anthology magazine a few years ago. We may do that at some point but I don’t think I wanna scanlate the webcomics. If Shino Ura publishes more works at some point maybe we’ll think about working on them but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. The author’s website is here if you wanna check that out. The comics published as books aren’t up there anymore but everything else is.

Oh I also found out recently that one of Shino Ura’s webcomics “Prologue Episode” was published officially in English as one of the one-shots in “Glaeolia 2” by the small-print publisher Glacier Bay Books. Here’s their page for it. Though it seems like it’s out of print now. You can maybe find it somewhere and there’s a form to request they print more.

Well, that’s it. I’m finally putting this out into the world now after like a year and a half of periodically working on it or thinking about working on it. I hope ya’ll like it.

Also, we have a new Discord! Come hang out and talk about manga. https://discord.gg/Nw45rfJYZF

Mugen Tengoku (Heaven/Hell of Uninterrupted Suffering) by Shino Ura

Hey so here’s this thing!
For those that don’t know what this is, it’s another short story by Shino Ura who does a lot of weird and unique sci-fi/fantasy stories. We did a volume-long book by Shino Ura a while back you can check out here. This is a single one-shot story that ran in the April 2020 issue of Comic Beam. Technically speaking it ran in a little supplemental book of one-shots called “Comic Beam Fresh” which came with that issue. I won’t go into it but it was a real pain to track this down because digital versions of magazines stop going on sale after a year. So after a LOT of effort I found this and scanlated it. Also because that magazine is out of print you can’t even buy this in its original language anymore unless you get it from someone who bought it because it’s not compiled in any sort of stand-alone book. This is technically the newest manga released by Shino Ura, they haven’t posted anything since this came out last year. (I dunno why really. Maybe they’re working on a series or something now? Not sure. They haven’t posted anything on their Twitter for a while now either.)Anyhow this is a pretty fun 26-page one-shot I hope ya’ll check out.

There’s one other book Shino Ura has put out called Gishi Sanjinden (Fake Biography of Sanjin/Mountain Person) which I want to do at some point. But at the moment I’m trying to focus on finishing Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi rather than stopping to do too many side projects. (This one is pretty short so working on it wasn’t so big a deal.)

I can’t upload it to Mangadex until they allow adding new series back. Which hopefully they do at some point soon.
Anyhow, check it out! It’s a fun weird thing.

Yuugai Muzai Gangu (Harmful Innocent Toys) by Shino Ura

Hey so as something different I decided to scanlate this. I was gonna do it all on my own but some other folks on the team helped out. The turnaround time of this whole thing was about 8 days. I needed a break from relentlessly working on Takeshi every day.

So, this manga is amazing. Please read it. It’s probably better if you go into it not knowing anything. I’ll say it’s a short story collection. It was originally published as a series of webcomics, then later compiled as a volume under the Comic Beam label (published by Enterbrain) in 2019. It was nominated for the 2020 Kono Manga ga Sugoi award. The author has one other book out in 2019 and has since had a one-shot published in Comic Beam. I might do that other book at some point but not immediately. I used the digital version as the raw for this because it’s generally-speaking good enough quality for something like this (It’s much better than Shueisha’s digital raws for example).

Anyhow I love this manga and it’s amazing and I don’t know of anything else like it. So please read it. I finished reading it a little while back and felt like I just had to scanlate it despite being pretty busy with other stuff. The author’s website is here if you wanna check that out. The comics published as books aren’t up there anymore but everything else is.

Uhh, that’s it. Go read it.

Shimabukuro One-Shots Memories with Oda-san Manga!, Halftime, & Jijii 100%

Check out The Book! It’s a really great novel we released recently that’s a sequel to Part 4 of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure!

Ok, so here’s 3 one-shots done by Shimabukuro Mitsutoshi a.k.a Shimabuu a.k.a the author of Toriko and Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi!!.
These have been delayed a bit because I had Innocent and 3-Gatsu no Lion to focus on. Also the Oda-san manga took a while to find someone to clean it and for them to actually clean it because it has so many redraws.

The first one ran in Shounen Jump issue 2017-33, which came out July 17th 2017, “Memories with Oda-san Manga!”. It was part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of One Piece by Eiichiro Oda, whom Shimabukuro-sensei is friends with. He talked a few experiences with him and it’s also a sorta short autobiography/memoir. It’s good, check it out if you haven’t seen it yet.

The 2nd two are “Halftime” and “Jijii 100%” (Geezer 100%) which ran together in semi-monthly manga Grand Jump issue 2017-19, which came out September 6th 2017. Both are pretty short but they’re both pretty entertaining gag manga that shows Shimabukuro is still totally capable of bringing the spirit and comedic timing he did with Takeshi all those years back.

They’re all pretty quick reads and definitely worth reading. I hope you check them out.

And now that I’ve got some free time, hopefully we’ll get some more Takeshi and 81diver done soon. Enjoy, everybody!

Prince of Laughter Penpenpen (One-Shot by Shimabukuro Mitsutoshi) and Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi! 10

Ok, at last, this one’s done. Goddamn this took a while.
Sp for those that don’t know, this is a one-shot by Shimabukuro Mitsutoshi (author of Toriko and Takeshi) that he published in the kids/kodomo manga magazine Saikyou Jump back in April. They don’t have a digital magazine or anyone that scans it so I had to seek out the magazine and scan it at the time and it’s been a project on my backlog for a while now (This actually came out like a week before Chingiri but that one was easier so I did it first). Largely because it’s a 30-page gag manga, and gag manga are known for having lots of text and lots of jokes on each page. Meaning it’s pretty translation heavy and time consuming. Then Joeabandonedmine was hard at work cleaning and typesetting it, which is a pretty lengthy task on its own.

Anyhow, at first I thought it was kinda dumb, and it is aimed towards kids, but it actually makes good use of Shimabukuro-sensei’s sense of humor. And it’s pretty interesting what he did with a simple premise. Check it out.

Also we’ve got the next chapter of Takeshi all done! It’s a good one. Really emotional and it’s starting up a lot of what makes the series really good. I’m hoping we can keep up a good pace with this series and keep getting it out. This is the 2nd to last chapter of the “Proof of a Leader Arc”. I’ll be working on getting the next one done sometime soon.

We’ve got a lot of other stuff going. The Book is being edited now, we’re working on the new JoJolion, and apparently Shimabukuro-sensei did a 15-page one shot about his memories with Oda-sensei (of One Piece) in this week’s Jump, which we may work on maybe. The next Innocent volume comes out in late August and the next 3-Gatsu no Lion volume comes out in October. So there’s a lot going on, and I really wanna get some of this stuff done while I’ve got time so I don’t get overwhelmed later. Hopefully when all this stuff’s done we can work on a new series, as there’s a few I’ve wanted to do for a while.

Chingiri (One-Shot by Shimabukuro Mitsutoshi)

Hey everybody. Today we’ve got a weird thing. This is a one-shot recently published in Shounen Jump called “Chingiri” by Shimabukuro Mitsutoshi, author of Toriko.
This ran in issue 2017-21-22, from the end of April. Glad we’ve finally got this done, it took a while to find people free to do this because it’s not a regular project.
It’s pretty short, only 19 pages long. Most one shots are usually longer. But anyhow, it’s pretty fun. Though part of the central conceit of the story is it uses really obscure Japanese phrases the audience is MAYBE not supposed to have heard of/understand, so I ended up having to put in a lot of notes.

Shimabukuro-sensei ALSO had ANOTHER one-shot published in Saikyou Jump last month, and we’re working on that as well. Though that one is longer and a lot wordier so it’s taking me a while to find time to translate most of it. I’m gonna try to get to that soon. But other projects and real-life stuff are making it hard to find time for everything, as they often do.
They also announced Shimabukuro-sensei will have yet ANOTHER one-shot appearing this autumn in Grand Jump. So we’ve got that to look forward to as well. Plus I wanna keep getting more Takeshi done, so there’s no shortage of stuff to work on and eventually read.

Shimabukuro-sensei actually does a LOT of one-shots. They published a book of a few one-shots he did back before Toriko came out (And Toriko itself had 2 one-shots). I dunno if there’s any interest in us working on this, I don’t think any of them are gonna become a series at this point, but who knows (Toriko had one one-shot in 2002 before another one a few years later, and then it got serialized in 2008). If you guys WOULD like to see us work on that book, let me know.
Some more info here.
For now I’m going back to working on the Jojo novel The Book, which I’m hoping I can finish relatively soon. Like in a month or so.

Warai no Kamigami (One-Shot by Shimabukuro Mitsutoshi)

Warai no Kamigami_00

Ok, so we finally managed to get this done. Thanks so much for the bunch of people on the staff that took extra time on top of regular weekly duties to get this scanlated. Thanks to Mooni, Shinjo, and Swiftgold for working on this.
This is the 19-page one shot manga by Shimabukuro-sensei (Author of Toriko) that ran in Shounen Jump alongside Toriko 326 a couple weeks back. It’s weird as hell. But I kinda had fun scanlating it. Way more than I expected. Shimabukru’s gag style is so bizarre. I hope you guys enjoy this.
