Division Chief Shima Kōsaku Volume 1

Division Chief Shima Kо̄saku Volume 1

Woo baby we made it to Division Chief. For those that are unaware, this is the continuation of the Shima Kōsaku series after Section Chief Shima Kōsaku which we finished a couple months ago. Check out my introduction of the Shima Kōsaku series I wrote back when we started if you haven’t yet. You could consider this “Part 2” much like the parts in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. With a new part, the volume numbers start over at 1 and the chapters also start over at 1, but effectively this is volume 18 of the overall “Shima Kōsaku series”.

So now I gotta explain a little bit about how the series works once it gets to Division Chief.
Originally Shima Kōsaku was just a single one-shot comic about a subsection chief who was told he was about to be promoted as long as he kept his head down and didn’t get into trouble in the next month or so, and then uh, does. This then turned into a number of sequel one-shot stories that came out months apart, then finally it became a regular series that ran weekly in the Kōdansha magazine Weekly Morning.

Then Section Chief Shima Kōsaku ended at 17 volumes which I think was probably just going to be the end of the series. Originally it was a series about sort of a “regular guy” and as the series went on, Shima starts doing more and more impressive things and starts being involved in more and more important aspects of the company that affect more and more people. So the series ends right after he’s finally promoted to Division Chief after refusing being promoted a number of times. Section Chief Shima Kōsaku ended in early 1992. We always include the copyright pages that list which years and issues of the magazine each chapter was published in, as they more or less correspond to that same time in-story. And the character ages in real time.

So then we get to Division Chief. The Division Chief Shima Kōsaku series started out as not a regular series, but a bunch of one shots that were just called “Shima Kōsaku One-Shot Series” and this volume includes most of those. They were serialized irregularly and were sort of just “bonus chapters” of Section Chief at first rather than starting into long story arcs. Also because they were irregularly serialized, the year they were published was far apart. After Section Chief had been running weekly for years, so having around 45 chapters a year, now we were getting about one Division Chief chapter every 6 months or so on average as Hirokane-sensei was for the most part moving on to other series. Volume 1 here includes chapters that ran in the magazine from 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995. The actual volume came out in mid-1995. As a result the chapters are called things like “Series (1) (Part 1)” rather than “Step #” like they were before, but this ends in the middle of volume 2 and they just start being called “Step #” again for the chapter number. A “series” is a single isolated story that ran 1-5 issues of the magazine in a row before a long break. Ultimately Division Chief starts to become more of a “normal series” in the middle of volume 2 when it started being regularly serialized every issue of Weekly Morning at the start of 1999. So the first two volumes kind of zoom through a bunch of years at once, just showing a couple little events each year or two, before it slowing down again to being weekly from 1999 onward (Later on it starts running every other issue as Hirokane-sensei is also working on his other series Tasogare Ryuuseigun at the same time).

Here’s a hiatus chart I made to give you a visualization of the whole thing.
Shima Kо̄saku Current Status Hiatus Chart

I also made one of these charts of the prequels though I don’t plan on working on those for now.

So as you can see, we’re really still not all that far into the series overall despite having worked on it since September 2021. This is the equivalent of volume 18 of the overall series and the newest one out in Japan right now that came out a few weeks ago would be volume 86. Plus there’s also 21 seemingly-canon volumes of prequels which we could maybe work on at some point if we feel like it. Also there’s a bunch of non-canon spinoffs. So don’t expect us to get all the way to the end, let alone all the way to the end and also the prequels, as that would take uhhh a really long time. Even if we came out with one volume a month it would take around 6 years to do just the “main series”. I really need to properly balance my priorities of doing free fan projects as a hobby with the rest of my life. I’m doing all the translating, raw providing and usually nearly all of the typesetting and some cleaning on each of these. And they’re full of business jargon and real-life events and cultural references and all sorts of things on top of the usual needing to make the characters sound in-character and speech natural. So it’s a lot, don’t expect it to follow any sort of fixed schedule. I really love this series, it’s super-unique unlike anything else I’ve read and examines so many complicated aspects of life, whenever I work on it I want to do more, but it really takes a lot of time and energy. But I’m gonna keep working on Division Chief for now, which is a total of 13 volumes long.

Anyhow, enjoy. Everyone go tell all your (adult) friends about the series and get them to read it. Until next time.

Section Chief Shima Kōsaku Volume 17 (End of Section Chief Arc)

Section Chief Shima Kо̄saku Volume 17

Holy shit we made it. Man, after about a year and a half we’ve finished the whole Section Chief Shima Kōsaku series. It kinda felt like we’d never get here for a while, it’s a seriously difficult series and I probably went overboard working on this, but we got all the way to the end of the first part of the series. All seventeen volumes and the entire run of Shima’s journey from “regular guy” to where he is here which is sort of a “super salaryman”. This volume contains uhhh the whole climax of the major elements of the Section Chief story. So not much to say without spoiling it, but a lot happens.

In a lot of ways this first series is a complete story. It has a bunch of story arcs and a clear through-line of the journeys of all its major characters. So I’m pretty proud of the fact that we got through all this. This was my original goal, to at least get the first series done. I think “Section Chief” is a great series even if you feel like at that point you’ve “had enough” and don’t want to continue past that.

Uhhh so I guess we’re gonna start on Division Chief Shima Kōsaku next! From here I don’t really have a plan beyond “Well I still feel like doing it so I’ll keep doing it.” I dunno about trying to do the whole series or anything because that would basically mean this is the one series I work on for several years, even if I went really, really fast. So I dunno about that. But let’s start on Division Chief and see where that goes. That series is pretty hard, by the way. As the story progresses from here it becomes more about economics and different industries and how they work, since the protagonist is less of a “regular guy” and more of a “major guy”. But all the various human drama, slice of life stuff still continues. So I hope you all look forward to it.

Enjoy the finale of Part 1 everybody! See you in Part 2!

Section Chief Shima Kōsaku Volume 16

Section Chief Shima Kо̄saku Volume 16

Hoooo boy, we have made it to volume 16. And if you’ve been following this series, you know what that means, the next volume is the final volume of the Section Chief arc. It’s been quite a journey and it’s nearly at the end. Feels kinda crazy. This series seriously requires a lot of work, a lot of research, a lot of slow careful checking and editing, so it feels good to finally be at this point. I guess we’ll be starting on the Division Chief arc after that but I’m not sure if we’ll be attempting to keep up the same schedule because this series just takes tons and tons of time to make progress on. I kind of need to balance out my time so I’m not spending all my free time scanlating. But I’m quite proud that we’ve now nearly finished Part 1.

So this volume contains the second half of the Office Chief Hirai arc and then all of the short but sweet Thailand arc. It ends exactly at the end of the last chapter of that arc. Next volume, volume 17, is sort of the climax of the entire 17-volume series. It ties up all the plotlines that are still open, mainly about the drama around the possibility of Nakazawa becoming president. It’s gonna be a great one, so I hope you’re all looking forward to that. “Section Chief Shima Kōsaku” just on its own without its sequels is a pretty complete story and I think it’s really good even without the whole rest of the series which would take us like 7 years of releasing one volume a month to finish, so I’m definitely not promising I’ll do the whole thing. But we’ll see where the future goes.

Section Chief Shima Kōsaku Volume 15

Section Chief Shima Kо̄saku Volume 15

Ooookay, here we are, volume 15. A whole lot has been going on in my life this past month or so and it’s really been quite distressing. Just a generally stressful and difficult time all around with a lot of ups and downs. But it feels good to have this volume done, working on this series is generally a pretty enjoyable time (for something that’s work, at least).

This volume concludes the Cosmos Group Acquisition arc and starts the Office Chief Hirai arc. After this volume we’ve just got two volumes left in Section Chief, so we’ve really got not too much left at this point. The plan for now is to start Division Chief at least and just see where we go. I might do it slower or more infrequently or something like that but I really don’t think I’m just gonna marathon through 85 volumes of this series (which isn’t including the prequels, spinoffs, and non-canon extra things. And also the series is still going.) I hope you’re all enjoying it, I know I am. There’s really just a lot that happens in this series and it feels like it always tackles a different part of society. And it’s interesting to look back on their perspective on the future back in the 80’s and early 90’s. The whole Cosmos Group buyout story is loosely based on how Matsushita (Panasonic) bought Universal in 1990. But I’d imagine it’s also quite dramatized and combines some other semi-real-life events to create what we ultimately end up with. The Hirai arc is also a really good human drama with a lot of complexity to it. I thinks folks will really enjoy that if you’ve liked those sorts of arcs so far.

Anyhow, I’m gonna go relax. The next release will probably be the new Ikoku Nikki chapter that comes out on the 8th Japan time. Then the next Jojo chapter should come out on the 17th Japan time.

Oh by the way the Gold Soushuuhens only went up to volume 14 so we don’t have any more starting color pages for the last 3 volumes. We’re just gonna have to make do with the color pages from the tankoubons, bunkobans, and zenshuus from this point on I’m afraid.

Section Chief Shima Kōsaku Volume 14

Section Chief Shima Kо̄saku Volume 14

Hey everyone, here’s more Shima! Man I really am doing this a lot aren’t I? Ok well this is volume 14. With this volume we continue with the next part of the endgame of the series, the buyout of Cosmos. It’s the big negotiating deals-y volume (Though that story continues into volume 15). After this we only have 3 volumes left in Section Chief, which feels crazy that we’re that close after this seeming like such a huge hill to climb for so long.

This next month there’s gonna be a lot going on and I’m gonna be busy during some of it in which I won’t be able to translate manga so I dunno when volume 15 will end up getting done. I’ll probably spend way more time on this than is healthy just like I usually do, though. There’s the first chapter of The JOJOLands coming out next month on February 27th Japan time which is sort of a big deal as Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is a big series going since the 80’s separated into multiple parts kind of like Shima Kōsaku, but unlike Shima Kōsaku all of it’s been translated. Jojo has 131 volumes which have all been translated (With 132 about to start) and Shima has 106 volumes if you count the 21 prequel volumes and so far we’ve only finished 14 (And I think another group did like 2 volumes of one of the prequels like 8 years ago?) so we’ve still got a long road ahead. Also I don’t think I’m gonna do all of that probably (Definitely not doing the prequels). But I’m quite sure we’ll finish Part 1 of Shima Kōsaku at this point and then we’ll at least start on Part 2 and see how that goes. Also it’s very possible Araki-sensei keeps doing Jojo for more than a decade longer so that could also be a huge thing I’ve cursed myself to have to work on for a long, long time. But it should be very exciting! I hope you’re all looking forward to that. Also there’s a new Ikoku Nikki in a couple weeks.

Everyone go read Shima it’s great. Tell all your friends who are adults to go read this series. I have no marketing skills or a marketing department so I can’t think of anything catchier than that, meaning it’s basically all up to you.

Edit: Oh I should also mention I added a Ko-fi link in the right sidebar if you’d like to donate that way. The Paypal link is still there and it basically does the same thing, it’s still ultimately just sending money through paypal, but it’s a different sorta UI.

Section Chief Shima Kōsaku Volume 13

Section Chief Shima Kо̄saku Volume 13

Ok I take back what I said before THIS is the last release of the year (Given that it’s the last day of the year now). So with this volume we’re really into the beginning of the endgame of the Section Chief arc. After this we’ve just got 4 volumes left. This gets the plot points that finish out the rest of the arc set up. It also contains the whole car racing arc. It’s also Shima’s first big project as the head of the General Advertising Section. You see Shima change somewhat as a person around this point. We’re also now into what was originally published in 1991.

Anyhow, we had lots of Shima this year, I hope you all enjoyed it and have a happy new year. For those not keeping track we released 11 volumes of it this year. Chapters 18 to 131 (That’s 114 chapters!). That’s in addition to the end of Takeshi, two volumes of DRCL midnight children, and a whole bunch of 3-Gatsu no Lion and Ikoku Nikki. I’ll keep working on this series next year. Hopefully we can get to the end of Section Chief in not too long. I’m trying to find a balance where we’re making progress on this but I’m not spending too much time on it. I dunno if you noticed but this series has like, a lot of text. And usually groups don’t release a volume a month of any series. I’m probably still devoting too much time to this. Anyways, it’s been quite a year and I’m pretty proud of all we managed to do. It was seriously a lot and I think we kept it all up to pretty high quality standards. Okay, everyone go read Shima and tell all your friends to read it, it’s great.

Section Chief Shima Kōsaku Volume 12

Section Chief Shima Kо̄saku Volume 12

Woo! Ok we’re back again with volume 12. This is a big one. A bunch of some of the most impactful events of the series happen in this one, so I hope you enjoy it. This one gets a lot more into the nature of the economics of Japan and the Philippines back in 1990-1991 and the perspectives people had at the time. And some characters that we’ll keep seeing for a long time are introduced in this volume as well. And much like the last one it can get pretty dark at times. We’re now well into the latter half of Section Chief now and we’re going to start heading towards the endgame (of part 1) from here. And then we’ll probably start on part 2, I guess.

There’s a good chance this is the last volume of Shima we end up releasing for 2022 unless I go really fast on volume 13 which I’m probably not gonna spend my whole holidays working on. So in case we don’t, I hope you all enjoyed all the Shima we’ve brought to you this year, along with all the other manga we’ve released this year which has been quite a lot. Have a safe, happy holidays, ya’ll.

Section Chief Shima Kōsaku Volume 11

Section Chief Shima Kо̄saku Volume 11

Hey everybody, we’re back with volume 11. This volume took a bit longer than the last couple because we did uh… Three 3-Gatsu no Lion chapters, an Ikoku Nikki chapter, and a whole volume of DRCL in between. Which really took a lot out of me to be honest, that DRCL volume. Compared to that, translating this volume where we there’s long sections about consulting companies and foreign aid and inter-company deal making around building factories was downright easy. Anyhow I’m glad to be back on doing this series and I’m thankful to all those that helped out. A lot of these projects are mainly just me doing all or most of the jobs so it can be a bit exhausting. Like I mentioned in some of the other posts here about Shima, I dunno how long a lot of these volumes will end up taking me since there’s no limit to how fast we could potentially do these since the series is already out in Japanese. I basically need to find my own personal equilibrium where I’m making progress on this but not going so overboard that I get burnt out or I’m neglecting some other part of my life. It can be tricky at times.

I should give a warning that this story does get a bit dark at times and one of the darker events happens in this volume, so be warned. This volume also takes place entirely in the Philippines, and has a lot more story talking about what it was like there in the early 90’s and Japan’s relationship with them. Anyhow, enjoy, everyone! Tell other folks about this series if you like it, I think it’s really something unique and unlike anything else I’ve ever read. I hope we can grow the English-speaking fandom somewhat.

Section Chief Shima Kōsaku Volume 10

Section Chief Shima Kо̄saku Volume 10

Whew, we finally make it to the double digits. Here is Shima volume 10, everyone. After now over a year of work we’re at volume 10 of the 17 volumes of this part. Really I’m quite proud of this, it’s been tons and ton of work translating this and getting the project constantly moving. When you’re doing a big project like this where it can potentially take years and years if you don’t keep up a decent pace it can be hard to be motivated. It’s such a long journey to try to do a series this long and you need to work on it pretty regularly if you want to get it each release finished and in a releasable state at a quality level you’re proud of. And we got this done on top of Gishi Sanjinden and Ikoku Nikki this month which was a huge challenge (Go check those out if you haven’t yet, they’re great). For this I had to basically finish one task and immediately start on another for the past several weeks. It’s been exhausting.

But all that considered, we’ve finally made it to the Philippines. The Philippines arc in Section Chief goes for a pretty long time and it’s an interesting look at a totally different country with a different culture and different economic standards. This arc goes for a while and a lot happens, so I hope you all enjoy it. I feel like I keep saying “A lot happens” in every one of these posts but I guess when you release a whole volume at once that’s always the case. And generally I want people to get an idea of the story from reading it rather than me summarizing things and spoiling them too much in these posts.

And we’re now far past the mid-way point of Section Chief Shima Kōsaku, though we’re like… about an 8th of the way through the series as a whole or something. Like I said I’m not making any concrete plans about doing the whole series because that would take thousands of hours and several years but at least reaching the end of “Section Chief” is getting closer and closer and that feels pretty good after so much work, as that’s the story I really wanted to focus on getting out there. Though so long as I pace myself and don’t get burned out I’ll be okay with doing more past that point.

There’s a new 3-Gatsu no Lion chapter coming out later this week for the first time in a while, so won’t be long until then. Look forward to that. Anyhow, enjoy everyone!

Section Chief Shima Kōsaku Volume 9

Section Chief Shima Kо̄saku Volume 9

Oooookay, and here we are, volume 9! This volume contains the grand finale of the president-change drama arc. And then a whole bunch of other stuff after that. And with 9 volumes done that means we are past the half way point of the 17 volumes of Section Chief Shima Kōsaku! Man we’ve really made a lot of progress. It’s been almost exactly a year since we released volume 1 now, I think it’s gone pretty well. I started it while I was still doing Takeshi which was kind of a lot to be doing at once so the first few had a bit gap between releases. But the last few have been 3 weeks to a month apart which is kind of blazing fast when you consider how much text is in each of these.

This volume’s got a lot. Including the end of the aforementioned story arc, it’s got a bunch more characterization of recurring characters and continues building the overarching story. Also the manga turns into a boxing manga for a little while for some reason.

I dunno if anyone’s all that interested in this but I’ve been trying to track down the color pages for this series if I can. We’ve been including the extra color pages from the bunkobans and any magazine covers or color pages I can locate at the end of the volumes as extras. If you’re not aware, the color pages are in the original magazine but then they’re often not included when the series is compiled into books of just that series, but sometimes there’s some kind of “collector’s edition” that has all the color pages. This series has a LOT of editions, most of which are out of print. This series has been popular for a long time and as a result it has a lot of editions and reprints and repackaged versions. The earlier the part of the series it is, the more editions it has. So with Section Chief being the first, it has the most. But even then none of them just… have all the color pages. They’re all basically the same product every time despite having tons of editions.
It has tankoubons (the original volumes), bunkobans (pocket paperback size editions), shinsouhens (special editions, like bunkobans but more pages per book and fewer total books), gold soushuuhens (compilation editions, these weird larger editions on cheap paper they only did for volumes 1-14 with sometimes different art on the covers), wide aizoubans (wide collector’s editions which are pretty much the same as the shinsouhens but with different jackets), chronicles (A sort of selection of specific chapters. Labeled by a range of years they came out rather than being numbered), zenshuus (completed works editions, which are expensive deluxe things in boxes), encore editions (big 350+ page books labeled by what age Shima is in them), platinum comics editions (This is some other sort of big cheap version), selections (These just have names about what are in them, like ones specifically about Shima’s love life), and Kaigen Shima Kōsaku edtions (This is a digital-only version that is just the digital versions repackaged with a different cover and more pages per digital book).
And among these they have different versions of some of the color pages. Like the color pages in the bunkobans I’ve been putting in the releases sometimes put the original drawing on an abstract background and sometimes they do stuff like stretch one panel across a double page spread or make one panel be tinted blue or yellow or something so it looks kinda artsy instead of like the original page. They also don’t include all of them. Recently I found out that the Gold Soushuuhens contain some of the regular color pages that are part of the actual comic so I bought those and we’ll be including them from now on, though they only go up to volume 14 and they only contain the color pages from the first chapter of each volume, not the ones in the middle. There doesn’t seem to be any sort of online resource that says what color pages are in each of the other editions and I don’t think it’s worth it to me to buy them to try to find out because that would end up being really expensive just to find out the likely answer of “this has the same ones as the bunkobans”. So as a result we’ll have a few more color pages I found in the Gold Soushuuhens and if I ever find proof that one of the other editions is worth buying I might get one of those but probably I think we’ll be sticking with just these. I added the color pages from them to volumes 1-8 in all the usual locations you can get them.
I should also mention that previously I had a couple names romanized wrong, it should’ve been “Tomabechi” not “Tomapechi” and “Usami” not “Usabi”. I went back and changed all these a couple weeks ago but I feel I should mention that.

There’s no Ikoku Nikki this month, and although it was announced a 3-Gatsu no Lion chapter was coming out it was delayed due to Umino-sensei being ill, and supposedly 3-Gatsu will be resuming in October. So because we haven’t had either of those series or Jojo to do these have been coming out pretty fast. It’s probably not gonna keep up at this pace though. October has Ikoku Nikki and 3-Gatsu plus the new DRCL volume is coming out so that’s going to occupy a lot of my time, and I’m translating and typesetting these Shima volumes on my own. I’ve also been trying to get Shino Ura’s other one-volume manga of short stories done but it’s been quite a slog and is taking way longer than I expected it do. Those stories are full of a lot of abstract language and lore. Essentially that’s what I’ll be focusing on for the next month or so in addition to working on Shima volume 10. So a lot going on there.
