Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi! Ch. 12

takeshi_wb01

Check out The Book! It’s a really great novel we released recently that’s a sequel to Part 4 of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure!

Here’s chapter 12 of Takeshi! Here’s the intro I wrote about the series if you haven’t seen it yet.

Okay, now we finally get a proper introduction to everyone’s favorite circle-dog, Kojirou!

For this chapter we included the best quality versions of the Shounen Jump cover and color pages this chapter originally ran with that we could find.
Once we finish Wide-Ban 1 we’ll add in the ones for Chapter 1 and any others we find that we missed originally (I’m also planning to add some extras like the tankoubon volume covers and extra pages from the tankoubons). Just a note on that, we’re trying to find the best quality versions we can on various archival sites. In theory I could probably import the old 90’s copies of Jump from auction sites that have them on sale, but that’s really expensive and time consuming for just a couple of color pages, so I’m not going to go that far. But short of that I’d like to find as many of these as I can. If anybody has better versions of any color pages from Takeshi, let me know and send them to me at kewl0210@gmail.com.

Now that The Book is done I’m really hoping to get these out a bit more regularly. Though remember, these are all really wordy and gag-heavy (on a per-page and per-chapter basis) which takes a while to translate and I’m balancing this with a full-time job and other projects. My goal is around 1 a week for now.

The Book – Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure 4th Another Day by Otsu Ichi (Novel)

Hey, well, this is finally done. I originally started this in November of 2011 and now it’s finally completely done. In case you haven’t been keeping track of my occasional updates on this, this is a novel by Otsu Ichi published by Shuueisha one of the Jojo novels along with Over Heaven, Purple Haze Feedback, Jorge Joestar, and the Stardust Crusaders and Vento Aureo books from the 90’s. This one came out after the SC and VA books (Published in 1993 and 2001), but before the Over Heaven, Purple Haze Feedback, Jorge Joestar (Published in 2011-2012). This book came out in 2007, so it’s right in the middle. But if you ask me, it’s by far the best one. I’ve poured a ton of my heart and soul into getting this whole thing done (380 pages long in Japanese) because I think it’s a really great story that stands on its own even if it weren’t a Jojo novel.

It’s a story that takes place after Part 4, with the characters of Part 4. Though mostly the story focuses on a number of characters the author, Otsu Ichi, created. It’s a fairly dark story involving a lot of references to suicide and that sort of thing. But it does have a lot of well constructed themes and characters that makes it feel unlike anything I’ve read before. The story is also told somewhat non-linearly and the reader is left to figure out various mysteries as the different characters go through their journeys. The big theme is memories and how they affect you in the present. It gets so in-depth that I wrote up a guide for myself to make sure I understood everything to keep my translation accurate with all the foreshadowing and mysteries. That ended up turning into a full analysis which I attacked at the very end, which I highly advise you don’t read until you’ve finished the story.

I included this little blurb in the beginning of the book to give anyone reading it an idea of what my journey translating the whole thing has been. So I thought I’d repost that here:

Hi, it’s Kewl0210, the translator of this novel and head of the scanlation group Hi Wa Mata Noboru. I thought I’d stick this in here to start off with. So, uh, I started translating this novel in November of 2011 and finished in July of 2017. There’s a variety of reasons it’s taken so long. All basically being that because this novel is “pure translation”, something I’m doing completely on my own and having no due date, so I had to put it off again and again because it’s such a long book (380 pages in Japanese) and I’ve had so many other projects translating anime and manga and the like in that time. Often for my own physical and mental health, otherwise I’d be kind of overworking myself, even more so than I normally do. In the period since I started this book and finished it I think I became a much different person, and a much better translator (So it took plenty of effort to edit the beginning up to my current standards), and quite a lot is probably exactly the same. But because this took so long and it’s one novel finally releasing all at once after 5 years on and off of work, I just wanted to say thanks to anyone that’s reading this. I wouldn’t have spent all that time and effort if I didn’t think this book was really something special and really worth reading. If you ask me, it stands up as a great novel even if it weren’t a spinoff of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (But that certainly makes it better), and for over 5 years now I’ve been thinking about how much I want to share it with people. That kind of thing is what’s kept me coming back to this all this time until it was done.

Here’s that journey in a handy chart form (I kept a log of my progress every day I worked on it):

Something interesting I’ve been thinking about recently is that Otsu Ichi took 5 years to write this book, throwing away full manuscripts multiple times because he felt they weren’t good enough, and now it’s taken over 5 and a half for me to translate it. Those two things aren’t related, but they’re an interesting coincidence. Especially since I’m doing this as a fan translation. He wrote it from 2002 to 2007 (Or something like that, it came out in 2007, he might’ve finished it before then) and I translated it from late 2011 to mid-2017. So going from nothing to you reading this English version of this book sure has been quite a journey. Though it was only about a year of me constantly working on this, if you take out all the long breaks from it. And that’s working in parallel with my current manga/translation projects (Meanwhile Otsu Ichi had to take up a second job in order to earn an income while he was writing this).

Also, if you’re interested, a dedicated Japanese fan has been making a video-doujinshi of this book (Unfinished as of this writing. They might not be updating it anymore. But it covers most of the story) which you can see here: http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/27778746
If you want to read along with watching that, be advised that some scenes of the novel are skipped or altered slightly and others are slightly out of order. I do recommend watching it though, it’s really well done.

And maybe if you enjoyed this, check out our other projects at https://hiwamatanoboru.com//

Also, thanks a ton for Em helping me edit (Which ended up being a much more arduous process than I’d imagined; taking most of July and some of August 2017. Doing some parts of this years after other parts, and most of the later parts in small bursts at 1-2AM when I wake up at 8:45AM, go figure how that happened). She went through the whole book and found tons of little things to improve how it sounded and flowed along with any mistakes. I can only hope I eventually get my writing style as good as hers.

Anyhow, that’s about it. This represents a lot to me so I hope you enjoy it. I’m gonna go take a short break from translating to read In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust.

Enjoy.

We made it to volume TWENTAAAAY!!! Woo! 15 to go. This volume’s got one of my favorite parts where Tanio really starts to feel menacing along with the audience getting a real feel for his overall plan.
It’s also the start of a big tournament that lasts a looooong time. So I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks so much to high8sky for her tireless placing of the PASHIH sound effects. There’s friggin’ thousands of them in this.

There’s no Jump next week for one of Jump’s usual weeks off. So next chapter will be week after next, around this time. See ya then.
I’m working on finishing up editing of The Book, and then it’ll finally be released! That’s gonna be great, I’ll be so happy to finally have that done. Just a bit more, almost there.

Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi! Ch. 11

takeshi_wb01

Here’s chapter 11 of Takeshi! Here’s the intro I wrote about the series if you haven’t seen it yet.

Ok, with this chapter we finally finish the ~Proof of a Leader~ Arc! The first non-one-off chapter series of Takeshi.

We’ve actually finished all the chapters in Volume 1 now. Volume 1 actually ends at chapter 9. But the Wide-Bans, being wider sorta-deluxe versions, have more chapters in them. Wide-Ban 1 has 17 chapters in it. My plan at the moment is at the end we’ll release it as one big zip to download and I’ll also include the extra pages from volume 1-2 and the color pages I’ve managed to find for that. (We would’ve had the color pages in chapter 1 but we didn’t have good quality versions at the time, which we’ve managed to track down since).

I’m working hard on finishing editing the Jojo novel The Book at the moment (It’s about 100,000 words I’m checking through, making sure it has no translation errors, typos, and all sounds as well phrased as possible). But after that I hope to get more of this done pretty soon. My goal is to get them done around weekly. It’s a bit too hectic for me to do that at the moment though, given how wordy most of the chapters are.

JoJolion 66 (Version 2) and JoJolion 67

This chapter’s fairly short, only 34 pages long. Likely because Araki-sensei is doing a Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan one-shot in Bessatsu Margaret next month, an issue which comes out on the 13th.

Though he’s not taking a break or anything like he did last time he did a Rohan one-shot. So we’ll see you next month.

We’re gonna try MAYBE to do more volume scanlations of older volumes of JoJolion, we’ll see if that works out. WE haven’t done more than the 2 we did a while ago because of lack of cleaners. Usually it’s all the JoJolion team can do to get the new chapter and the higher-quality magazine version of the chapter done every month. I’m also FINALLY almost done with The Book, the Part 4 novel. We’re working on editing it and hope to get that out within a few weeks.

Prince of Laughter Penpenpen (One-Shot by Shimabukuro Mitsutoshi) and Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi! 10

Ok, at last, this one’s done. Goddamn this took a while.
Sp for those that don’t know, this is a one-shot by Shimabukuro Mitsutoshi (author of Toriko and Takeshi) that he published in the kids/kodomo manga magazine Saikyou Jump back in April. They don’t have a digital magazine or anyone that scans it so I had to seek out the magazine and scan it at the time and it’s been a project on my backlog for a while now (This actually came out like a week before Chingiri but that one was easier so I did it first). Largely because it’s a 30-page gag manga, and gag manga are known for having lots of text and lots of jokes on each page. Meaning it’s pretty translation heavy and time consuming. Then Joeabandonedmine was hard at work cleaning and typesetting it, which is a pretty lengthy task on its own.

Anyhow, at first I thought it was kinda dumb, and it is aimed towards kids, but it actually makes good use of Shimabukuro-sensei’s sense of humor. And it’s pretty interesting what he did with a simple premise. Check it out.

Also we’ve got the next chapter of Takeshi all done! It’s a good one. Really emotional and it’s starting up a lot of what makes the series really good. I’m hoping we can keep up a good pace with this series and keep getting it out. This is the 2nd to last chapter of the “Proof of a Leader Arc”. I’ll be working on getting the next one done sometime soon.

We’ve got a lot of other stuff going. The Book is being edited now, we’re working on the new JoJolion, and apparently Shimabukuro-sensei did a 15-page one shot about his memories with Oda-sensei (of One Piece) in this week’s Jump, which we may work on maybe. The next Innocent volume comes out in late August and the next 3-Gatsu no Lion volume comes out in October. So there’s a lot going on, and I really wanna get some of this stuff done while I’ve got time so I don’t get overwhelmed later. Hopefully when all this stuff’s done we can work on a new series, as there’s a few I’ve wanted to do for a while.
