Gintama Volume 34

Ok… Ok I finally finished this.
For more on this project of translating old Gintama volumes, check here.
So, as you might guess, doing these old Gintama volumes takes a REALLLY long time and A LOOOOT of effort. So I’m really glad I finally got this done. This took nearly 2 months from start to finish. And that’s with me scanning, translating, and typesetting it all myself alongside the other projects we’re doing.
Now, we no longer have any “incomplete” Gintama volumes, as we had done a couple of these chapters in volume 34 back when they were new in Shounen Jump. But now we’ve done the whole thing. And I re-translated all the chapters we had originally done, fixing up all the errors and improving the phrasing and characterization and such as much as I could (Plus obviously the scans are way better). So I’m pretty proud of the fact that we finally got this done.

I know we probably won’t get many people reading these since they’re so old, but it’s something that gives me some closure with this series as these were something I’d planned on doing for years and kept postponing or opting against doing them, given how much time and effort were involved (It’s because all this takes so long that I’m cutting myself off after V35 and not doing anything before V33, I could be at this forever).

This volume covers a bunch of one-off chapters, including the Yamazaki Anpan Stakeout one. And then the beginning of the Jirochou/Four Devas arc.

I’m gonna take a break from these old chapters for a bit and try to get more Ikoku Nikki and Takeshi done before I get seriously into volume 35, which is made up entirely by the rest of the Four Devas arc. But that’s the very last one, and we’ll have filled in the gap between the early chapters we did and when we started doing volumes at volume 36. This group will have every Gintama chapter from volume 33 to 76 done.

As for newer stuff, Volume 77 is slated to come out… some time in the future (Shueisha’s site lists planned release dates up to June and Gintama isn’t on there). Uh and the next chapter that’ll be appearing in the app, I don’t know when that’ll be either. Also we don’t know how many of them there’ll be, if they’ll all be compiled in volume 77 or if there’ll be a volume 78, we have no idea about any of that so far. The app chapter(s) will probably start coming out… sometime this year I’d guess??? Sorachi-sensei doesn’t have any due dates now so who knows how long he could take or how he’s gonna release them… The only thing listed on the app is that the app chapter(s) will be released in paper volume form at some point and there will be “over 100 pages” released on the app. God I hope it’s not all at once. Anyhow, that’ll probably be on anime/manga news sites once it’s announced. See ya later!

Gintama Volume 76

Ok, and here we have volume 76, the high-quality version of chapters 686-695. That covers NEARLY all the chapters released so far, all except the ones only in the final volume.
So here’s where Gintama is at as a project. The last chapter should PROBABLY be in the next issue of Jump GIGA which comes out on February 22nd.
Volume 77 should be the last volume and will come out in spring of this year. We’ll try to do that soon after it comes out.
And I’m going to try and do volume 34 and 35 at some point, but as a side project I work on when I have time (Those chapters take a loooong time to do and there’s a lot).

Gintama 700

Ok, here’s the next one. Another super-long 53 page chapter.
Next month is the last one possibly. Sources say. Certainly looks that way. Maybe. Who knows. Anything can happen.

Our HQ scanlation of V76 is moving along and we’re hoping to finish that up soon as well. Right now I’m sick and getting work done is hard, but we’re getting there.

Gintama 699

And we’re back!
Gintama will be running monthly in Jump Giga for 3 issues. Jump Giga is a side magazine that runs 6 issues a year in the pattern of 3 months in a row, then takes 3 months off. It’s mainly used to show off one-shots of new authors. It also usually has extra chapters for existing Jump series. So this is 2019 Winter Volume 1.

Gintama will have the cover for all 3 of the issues it’s in. And we think that’s when the series will finally end? Maybe? This is the first of those 3, and it’s 54 pages long. So I hope you all enjoy, working on this chapter was exhausting. So now that Innocent, Neko, and Gintama are done, I’m gonna get back to work on 3-Gatsu v14 and Sensei no Shiroi Uso.

Gintama Volume 75

And here’s volume 75! With that we’re all caught up again on re-scanlating the newest Gintama volumes.
This includes some stuff from Sorachi-sensei regarding the whole “not really the last chapter” thing, as this came out a couple weeks after chapter 698 was published.
Otherwise, it’s like before, it’s a slightly higher quality version of the same chapters.
The next volume, 76, is slated for January. By then new chapters should be coming out. Volume 76 should cover ALMOST all the currently released Jump chapters but not all of them, so we’ll need to wait for V77 for that, which should include some Jump Giga stuff too.

I’m gonna be working on Volume 34-35 at some point soon, but I haven’t started them yet. Next I’m going to be focusing on translating the next Innocent volume and 3-Gatsu no Lion volume so they’re fully or mostly translated by the time their volumes come out. And of course we’ll do the new Gintama chapter in Jump Giga as soon as that comes out, regardless of where those other projects are.

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy this, everyone!

Gintama Volume 33

Ok, whew. This was a ton of work. I’m so glad it’s finally done.
K so for those not aware, originally we had translated Gintama V33-35 (some of 35) back when this group was first starting, but a lot of those chapters never got scanlated because we didn’t have staff to work on it at the time. So that’s why we have like one chapter from V33 released, 2 from V34, and none from V35. There’s a couple others Rufi translated and I edited back when I was editing his scripts and not doing them on my own, that were done by other groups, also. It’d been a long-held goal of mine to EVENTUALLY, when I felt like I wouldn’t be overworking myself, go back and do these 3 volumes. Now that we don’t have weekly Gintama to work on, I thought now would be a good time to do that (I had actually given up on ever doing it for a while, it had been so long. But recently I felt like doing it again, since this is my last chance to get them done before Gintama ends).

Now, that’s easier said than done. I had to redo all the translations from scratch because our translations in those days weren’t very good, as we were just starting out with Gintama and were way less experienced as translators. The reason we waited SO long to do this is because Gintama is a massive amount of work even at the best of times. Even after I’ve been translating Gintama for 8 years since I first did these, they’re still hard as nails to translate because there’s just so much text and so many colloquialisms, comedy, and references in these chapters. It takes more effort to get one of these wordy, comedic chapters of Gintama done than like 2 or more of most other series I work on.

My goal is to eventually do volume 34 and 35 as well, and then we’ll have done everything from volume 33 to the end, whatever volume that ends up being. We also won’t have any “loose” couple chapters not part of a full volume. Doing this one took me about a month from beginning to end. While it’d be really fun to do even MORE than those 3, it would be really nice if the entire series of Gintama had high-quality translations available beyond where Viz stopped (V24), it’s at the point where I don’t think I can really justify the time and effort I would need to spend on trying to do more, so I don’t think that’s gonna happen. I’m not sure how much people are actually going to read these ones I am doing, a lot of this is me just trying to accomplish my own personal goal. Especially when these are pretty old and mainly things people have read already and watched the anime of and such. This one is actually the equivalent of right where the ORIGINAL anime ended at 201 episodes. Remember back then when we all thought the anime might be over for good? Then it came back like 18 times. Looking back on Sorachi-sensei’s messages about what would happen to the manga with the anime “being over now” is kind of quaint in retrospect.

So yeah, this covers the Weather/Onmyouji arc (Except the first chapter which is the last chapter of V32) and the first 2 chapters of the Santa Arc. I hope at least some of you check this out, because we did our best with it and it was seriously a massive task that took a lot of hours nearly every day to get it done in this timeframe.

Volume 75’s scanlation with the volume raws is almost done, that should be pretty soon, now I have time to help with it myself. Next I’m going to be translating Innocent and 3-Gatsu no Lion so most or all of the translations are done by the time the volumes come out. Innocent Rouge V9 comes out November 19th and 3-Gatsu no Lion V14 comes out December 21st. So I should have enough time to translate them both in advance, while still maintaining my sanity and not overworking myself (Remember, this stuff is a hobby). But that means it’ll be a bit before we get V34 done, which I haven’t really started on. The Jump Giga with the next NEW Gintama chapter should come out in December sometime, probably near the end. The next new VOLUME of Gintama is V76 which is scheduled for January, probably early January.

Hope you enjoy this, everyone.

Gintama 698

Um?

Edit: So, now that this is out and there’s been some time for everyone to read it, turns out this is NOT the last chapter. And the series is going to finish off in Giga Jump. So we’ll be scanlating those, too, of course, whenever they come out.
Jump Giga has a very weird serialization. It’s the same magazine as Jump Next, Akamaru Jump, Jump Special. They rebrand it every once in a while. It’s mostly made up of one-shots or short series by newcomers as a way to test the waters and gauge what authors get new series. As of now it seems its schedule is they have 3 volumes in summer and 3 volumes in winter. It used to be once every 2 months, but now it shifted to one a month for 3 months, then 3 months off. I dunno how long the chapters are gonna be, but seemingly the first Gintama chapter will be in the one going on sale in December. They usually go on sale around the end of the month, like the 25th-29th. I’m sure they’ll advertise it a bit beforehand. And like before, we’ll keep doing volume versions as new one come out.

Gintama Volume 74

Okay, here’s volume 74! We’re now all caught up to the newest volume.
Ya’ll can go enjoy this while we finish up Gintama 698 which should be done pretty soon.
I’m thinking of maybe doing V33 next, because we did translate all the chapters in it back then when those chapters were new. It would also be nice to have all of the volume done rather than just one chapter. A bunch of the corrected versions never got scanlated, too. I’d have to go through all the translations to fix them up a bit, since it’s been like 7 years since then. If it doesn’t become too much of a huge frustrating chore, we might do more.
